La firme Apple est souvent appelée la “firme à la pomme”, du fait de son nom et de son logo (une pomme multicolore dans laquelle on a croqué). Apple Computer est fondé en 1976 à Cupertino (Californie) par Steve Jobs et Steve Wosniak, et lance la même année son premier ordinateur personnel, l’Apple I, suivi un an après de l’Apple II, plus petit, avec un écran couleur en option. En 1984, Apple lance le Macintosh (couramment appelé Mac), qui est le premier ordinateur personnel disposant d’une interface graphique intuitive facilement utilisable par le non spécialiste, et qui se vend à des millions d’exemplaires. Ce jusqu’au début des années 1990, où le Mac se trouve distancé par les ordinateurs fonctionnant sous Windows (le système d’exploitation de Microsoft), concurrent du Mac OS (operating system).
